Repairing Your Portable GeneratorRepairing Your Portable Generator

You’ve brought your generator out of storage, filled the tank, pulled the cable, and absolutely nothing. Hopefully, you are finding this out BEFORE the power outage or camping trip. This post will help you repair some typical issues you might experience. Prior to trying any repair work, remove the spark plug to avoid unintentional starting while you are working on the unit.

If the generator will not fire up or won’t remain running, inspect the muffler exhaust for an foreign particles. Examine the gas and oil to make sure you have appropriate levels of both when the exhaust is clean. Make sure the spark plug has an excellent connection and is clean.

It might be running at too low of a speed if the generator does not generate electricity. Change the rpm. This can also arise from a malfunctioning capacitor or windings, which should be changed and tightened up.

You might need to adjust the rpms to a lower speed or change the capacitor if the voltage is running high with no load on the generator. On the other hand,if the voltage is running low under no load, you might need to adjust the rpms to a higher speed or change the capacitor with one with a higher rating. In addition, for low voltage, you must inspect your winding resistance and change your rotary diodes,if needed.

If your voltage is ok without any load, but drops when you add a small load, you might need to increase your rpms or remove a few items of the load. You might also need to change your rotary diodes.

You most likely need to adjust the rpms or remove some of the load if the voltage drops when you add a high load.

If the voltage changes,it might be the result of dirty or loose connections. You might also need to manage the rpms to fix this problem. If all else fails call these guys: Eilhardt electrical contractors Cameron Park

Summarizing

If the voltage is running high with no load on the generator, you might need to adjust the rpms to a lower speed or change the capacitor. On the other hand,if the voltage is running low under no load, you might need to adjust the rpms to a higher speed or change the capacitor with one with a higher rating.
